I found it curious that the ingenious strategy employed to keep kids from purchasing beer from these machines was to us a timer to shut them off after a certain hour (10pm on most that I saw). As if Asahi-craving youngsters wouldn't dare buy such contraband during daylight hours (though perhaps there is an element to that...).
