Mariko and I had a late night on New Year's, but before it was over she made sure to take me to a shrine. Judging by the number of people there at 4am, I think it's a traditional activity.

you must have been going to Kume?? or Tonaki? You'll have to come out here soon for whale watching.. (in fact I just got back from my first trip of the season - it was just okay - and I'm going back out again in a couple hours)
