Multitasking

I don't do it often, but I love waking up early, making a breakfast that requires baking, then putting it in the oven while I run. It's perfect to come home and smell it while I take a shower, then eat it hot.

[I know, I need to learn to photograph food so it looks good]

This is called "Apple Stuffed Pancakes." It's comparable to another recipe I grew up with from my mom's library, called Dutch Babies. Base ingredients are flour, milk, and many eggs. The trademark of this recipe is that it grows big while it's still in the oven before collapsing when taken out.

Hey dave, this is olga from CMU - awesome that you're still baking. Are you finding all the ingredients ok in Japan?

Olga! Ingredients are difficult to get. What's available is expensive. All of my yeast, cinnamon, powdered sugar, and cocoa came in bulk from the U.S. (usually via visitors.) Flour I buy a lot of, but it's about $3.50/2.2lbs.
I can't really get any specialty ingredients unless I grow them (like cilantro). Baking is hard, but I persevere. And I'm gradually learning to cook more Japanese stuff, so that's good.

Wow, that's amazing - I have always wanted to learn to make proper Japanese food, but feel like I need instruction from a real Japanese person :) Though in NY you can pretty much find anything you want. Good luck on your marathon training, i'm running my first half marathon in a month, so it's been exciting.
